Hughie Erskine is a handsome and kind young man, but he is not rich. He is in love with a beautiful girl named Laura Merton. Laura loves him too, but her father says they can only get married if Hughie has £10,000.
One day, Hughie visits his friend, Alan Trevor, who is a painter. In Alan's studio, Hughie sees a very poor-looking old man working as a model for a painting of a beggar.
